What is the history of why Americans use their fork bowl up and English use the fork tines down?
Looked all over the internet but can find nothing. Am wondering if there was some historical event that led to the split in cutlery usage. Are the English the only country which pile food on the back of the fork? I know America is not the only one to use the fork bowl up.
As any of my dear English friends would tell you, peas can be mashed into the back of a fork, then lifted to the mouth.
I am wondering if - like the pronunciation differences between Castilian Spanish and South American Spanish - if forks were commonly used one way and then in some countries used another way due to a fashion that arose at some point? In the US mashing food into the back of a fork I don't think is ever seen.

The French also pile food on the back of the fork, but I don't know why.
EDIT: The French eat everything, including their little green peas, with the back of the fork. The fork also remains in the left hand, even after cutting.
I've wondered about this myself. Not a bizarre question at all.
Apparently, the UK manners came along second but were not adopted by those in the US. Interesting question.
